My family is devoutly Christian and much of what I will say probably will reflect this fact. I was homeschooled for seven years and my younger sister went through the same education system for five years. I currently work at Camwerkz - a premiere production equipment rental house - and my sister now studies English Literature at the Nanyang Technological University.

The reasons my family decided to pursue this path were unconventional. We were (and are) neither rich nor affluent, living on a single income. As mystical and intriguing as it may sound (I assure you mystery had little to do with it), faith was the primary motivator. I cannot be exhaustive in my statement for the sake of brevity, but we had certain key principles which we kept in consideration.

Firstly, one must understand that God does not encourage ignorance (Hosea 4:6) and instead wishes for His children to learn of His creation. Thus, an education of things intellectual is to be pursued rather than idleness and ignorance.

Secondly, one must understand that God also does not encourage ignorance of things spiritual (Proverbs 4:7). Unfortunately, many today are turning away from things spiritual, seeing them as backward-mindedness and primitive behavior. However - while not getting into the argument between atheism and faith - we believe that God wants His children to be spiritually literate: to know His will and His ways. As the verse earlier implies, this is of equal - if not greater - importance to God than knowledge of things physical.

Lastly, one must understand that God instructs parents to teach and guide their own children (Deuteronomy 6:7) to know and do all that is contained within His Word, of which the former two points are encompassed. Many Christians today, though, do not know or do not heed this instruction, but will find that there are consequences to their decision (Galatians 6:7).

After much thought and discussion, my family decided to homeschool as it was the best vector for which to fulfill these principles. As mentioned in my video interview, homeschooling is not success in a suitcase; it is merely a vector for a family to put much hard work and effort into reaching success…one small step of faith at a time.
